Family Cooking/Freezing Time
About a week and a half ago my mom, Kelly (sis-in-law) and myself embarked on a cooking extravaganza. It was our goal to get as many meals into the freezer as week could in one day to stock up for tax season. Kim--the master-planner--got to work and made lists upon lists. My mom and I did the shopping on a Wednesday night from 5-8:30 (with a short Costco dinner break for more energy). We went to Cash & Carry, Costco and then FoodMaxx to find the best deals. It all started when my dad asked if he could join my Dinner Diva Dos group. I chuckled because I didn't think that my group members would want a hamburger helper meal in exchange for their wonderful entree that they slaved over. I actaully mentioned doing a big cooking thing together last year, but my fam wasn't interested. I have done this before (alone with a little help from Leo) but I thought it would be much more fun in a group and a lot cheaper. We did our cooking/preparing/assembling on Saturday and we started at 9:00am and finished by 4:45pm before the dishes began. We each went home with 18 different meals and some of them will last 2 or 3 nights each. Yay! My freezer that we just got a few months ago is now well stocked and I actually did have a nightmare that we lost power. I told Leo that if we lost power for an extended period of time, I was renting a generator. Now we are prepared for tax season, at least with some yummy meals already assembled and ready to go. This will cut down on meal planning time, grocery shopping time, cooking time, dishes time...time, time, time... I'm up for it again, next time in the Spring/Summer to make more bbq/stovetop dishes so that I won't need to turn on the oven. Oh and the total cost for each of us was just under $100 (but we did use all of the spices and canned goods that we already had at home).

That's the Kim I know... planning, and then actually doing what was planned... you are an inspiration! But I just buy bulk easy food from Costco, and bore my poor family with the same meals. I am slightly inspired though, and before the baby comes, I may be asking you for some easy recipes... love you friend!
Ok, I'm a guy so I'm not supposed to care about this kind of stuff, but that is actually very awesome. I'm impressed.
AWESOME!!!! Do you think I could do enough to last a whole school year? : )
I have to say it again Kim, I am impressed! You'll have to pass on the recipes that you used for these 18 different meals. I don't think I have that many meal ideas to use at home. :)
Thanks for all of the nice comments, friends. Now I just have to get the "hoarder" in me to let us eat them. :)
I am doing this month by month. My Aunt Jen and I are doing it together. We only make 6 meals total, but I split each of these into two so I have 12. It is amazing how much more time I have and how much less stress there is in the evening. Especially since Hannah always needs to eat around dinner time. Good for you for doing this. The time you take totally pays off.
Thanks for getting me hooked on this. It was worth pushing through that late afternoon lull. Did I ever tell you I smelled like a cafeteria after this? Brett kept saying my hair smelled like meat when I was laying next to him on the couch. ha
